Every object at a temperature above absolute zero emits infrared radiation. The wavelength of IR emitted by the human body is 5-13 μm. It is then possible to measure the temperature of the human body by comparing the wavelength of IR it emits with that emitted by the environment. By selecting the appropriate measurement mode, it is possible to measure the temperature of other objects present in the environment as well.
